Viastore Systems has developed a new automated storage/retrieval system for high-speed picking. The High-Performance Picking System (HPPS) provides up to 40 percent more efficiency and uses up to 70 percent less floor space compared to manual systems, according to Viastore, and can be integrated into virtually any system design. Use of the HPPS allows customer orders to be picked quickly, efficiently, and ergonomically. This is accomplished through the intelligent guidance of the picker and the combined use of efficient warehouse management software and a pick-to-light system.
The HPPS has a number of features to boost productivity. The pick faces of the pick-to-light system can be automatically replenished with the required containers, and the storage/retrieval machine can automatically remove containers and cartons when they are empty, or when there will be no access required for some period of time. Another advantage is that the containers are placed directly in a sloping rack position that allows for comfortable and highly ergonomic access to them during picking, thereby reducing pick cycle times. The storage/retrieval machine is designed with a carriage that tilts the load-handling device to correspond with the slope of the pick channels.
