Top Eastern African Shipping Hub Implements N4 at Its Terminal

Navis, a part of Cargotec Corporation and provider of operational technologies and services that unlock greater performance and efficiency for the world's leading organizations across the shipping supply chain, announced that Société de Gestion du Terminal Conteneurs de Doraleh (SGTD) has successfully implemented the N4 terminal operating system (TOS) at its facility. A top shipping hub in the region, SGTD selected N4 as part of a plan to upgrade its terminal's infrastructure; focusing on increased automation and helping support customer demand as its operations expand.

Located at the second busiest shipping lane in the world, SGTD connects three continents, Asia, Africa and Europe at the southern tip of the Red Sea. Currently, SGTD handles 1 million TEU annually and is the main gateway for the Eastern African region, including landlocked Ethiopia, to the rest of the world. Along with high cargo volume, the terminal was experiencing operational challenges attributed to the multiple TOS applications previously in place. As a result, SGTD appointed Navis as its sole TOS provider to overcome these obstacles - providing more streamlined operations through a user-friendly interface for SGTD's customer base.

"It is important to us to continue to set a standard of modernization and innovation at our terminal and in our region," said Abdourahman Houssein Guireh, IT Director - Project Manager at SGTD. "When we implemented N4 at our terminal, cargo volume and yard congestion were at an all-time peak and we needed a system that was reliable and would help us navigate the operational challenges we were facing to become a leading terminal through state-of-the-art technologies. The flexible and scalable nature of N4, along with the assistance of Navis' team and our talented staff all combined to deliver a seamless transition to N4 with no downtime or disruption to our customers."

In operation since 2008 and with regionally unmatched productivity - averaging 35 berth moves per hour - and strategic location along the trade routes between Europe, Asia and Africa, SGTD has experienced a significant advantage over its competitors. The addition of N4 will help the terminal to further achieve its mission of increasing delivery of inland cargo with the shortest timeframe and highest berth productivity.

"As a partner to SGTD we are excited to be able to provide a solution to enhance its service and help handle the already high volume of shipment it experiences and will continue to experience as the terminal expands," said Chuck Schneider, General Manager, EMEA at Navis. "We look forward to supporting one of the leading terminals in the Eastern African region and the vast transshipments it receives from the Red Sea and Indian Ocean."
