BNSF Logistics names Dan Curtis president

BNSF Logistics LLC, the third-party logistics (3PL) provider unit of BNSF Railway, said today that it has named Dan Curtis president, effective immediately.

Curtis replaces Ray Greer, who had been president for slightly more than 7 years. The BNSF Logistics statement did not mention Greer.

Curtis has served as Dallas-based BNSF Logistics' chief operating officer since 2014, and before that spent three years as the unit's CFO. Curtis joined BNSF Logistics from dedicated contract carrier and 3PL provider Greatwide Logistics Services where he held various senior financial leadership positions. BNSF Logistics operates more than 30 offices in North America.

Evan Armstrong, president of Armstrong & Associates Inc., a consultancy that closely tracks the 3PL industry, said he wasn't surprised by the move, noting BNSF Logistics' performance was uninspiring under Greer. However, Armstrong said he was surprised the hire came from within the organization. According to Armstrong, when Greer joined he did not support the executives who had built the unit, and many resigned as a result.

Privately held BNSF Railway is a unit of Berkshire Hathaway Inc., which is run by billionaire businessman and investor Warren E. Buffett.

If you're a shipper, it's never good when a rep for an ocean carrier tells you, "You better sit down before you read this."
