Intermodal service between the U.S. and Puerto Rico

August 1, 2007
No Comments

Pacer Stacktrain and Trailer Bridge Inc. have teamed up to move 53-foot domestic shipping containers on an integrated, intermodal basis between the United States and Puerto Rico. Pacer Stacktrain operates an extensive double-stack rail network, while Trailer Bridge owns U.S.-flag vessels sailing between Jacksonville, Fla., and San Juan, Puerto Rico.

The partnership among the two transportation providers results in a fully integrated wholesale intermodal service that Pacer describes as an expansion of its PacerDirect door-to-door service in the United States. The service will be offered not only for shipments of U.S. origin but also for imported ocean freight that Pacer has trans-loaded into domestic containers at its own West Coast cross-docking operations. The PacerDirect Puerto Rico service provides customers with a single point of contact to manage all intermodal and vessel details, an all-inclusive rate quote, and one invoice that consolidates all land and ocean activities. The service is aimed specifically at freight intermediaries such as intermodal marketing companies, freight brokers, and trucking lines.

The freight will move in Pacer Stacktrain's 53-foot containers over Pacer's double-stack rail network before it is turned over to Trailer Bridge in Jacksonville. Trailer Bridge will provide the marine freight service between the continental United States and Puerto Rico. Trailer Bridge's service will utilize its existing Triplestack Box Carriers, the first vessels in the world built exclusively for 53-foot containers, and its triple-deck roll-on, roll-off vessels, the largest such vessels in the world.
