ELOshield Forklift Anti-Collision System Named Innovation Award Finalist by MHI

German safety technology company ELOKON makes an "impact" on U.S. material handling industry with debut of pedestrian-forklift anti-collision system

ELOshield Forklift Anti-Collision System Named Innovation Award Finalist by MHI

Tornesch, Germany, February 20, 2018 — The U.S.-based Material Handling Institute (MHI) has named ELOKON's forklift anti-collision system, ELOshield™, as an Innovation Award Finalist for "Best Innovation of an Existing Product." ELOshield was one of just four finalists in this category, and 12 finalists overall, out of over 110 nominations.

The MHI Innovation Award highlights the latest developments in supply chain technology and services, focusing on solutions that provide "quantifiable and sustainable results in terms of ROI, cost savings and customer satisfaction."

ELOKON and the other award finalists will present their solutions to a panel of five judges on Monday, April 9, 2018, at the MODEX material handling industry exhibition in Atlanta, Georgia. The judges are independent professionals from the U.S. material handling industry. Award winners will be named on April 11, 2018, at MHI's Industry Night gala.

ELOshield is an ultra-wideband warning system that helps prevent industrial truck accidents, improving safety for both equipment and workers in material handling operations. A fixed-site version monitors accident-prone areas, such as high-traffic aisle intersections. A mobile version monitors zones of up to 50 feet around moving vehicles.

The system's ability to customize object-detection zones around mobile equipment is unique. Zones can be programmed, by vehicle, as circles, symmetrical rectangles or asymmetrical polygons. Two different proximity zones, representing "warning" and "danger" risk levels, can trigger different system reactions.
When an industrial truck gets too close to a floor worker or another vehicle, ELOshield warns both the pedestrian and the driver with a combination of audible, visual and vibration alerts. The system also automatically slows the truck down to "creep speed" and, if desired, stops the truck.

ELOKON GmbH, based in Germany, is a global leader in lift truck safety technology. The company is making its U.S. debut at this year's MODEX exhibition, at Booth B1762. The firm is also delivering an educational seminar, "Applying Innovations in Advanced Driver Assistance-Systems to Material Handling," in Theater "I" on the MODEX show floor at 10: 30 a.m. on Wednesday, April 11, 2018.

Australian supermarket chain rolls out AI-powered grocery carts

Grocery shoppers in Australia will soon be able to zip in and out of the store in record time, bypassing the lines for cashiers or self-checkout kiosks altogether. They can just walk in, make their selections, and walk out with their bags in hand.

The secret to this express shopping experience is the “Caper Cart,” an AI (artificial intelligence)-powered smart trolley from San Francisco-based Instacart. In its first deployment in the Asia Pacific (APAC) region, the system is being tested by Coles Supermarkets, a food and beverage retailer with more than 1,800 grocery and liquor stores throughout the country.

How green is your glue?

If you’re looking to make the packaging process more eco-friendly, the obvious place to start is with the box itself. And that’s exactly what Salt Lake City-based Packsize did when it made its initial foray into sustainable packaging back in 2002. That year, the company launched its first product, an innovative on-demand packaging system designed to reduce cardboard waste (and the need for filler material) by creating a right-sized box for each shipment.

Now the company is ready for the next step: greening up the glue.
