Pelican BioThermal Supports Global Cycling Challenge for Diabetes Awareness

November 14, 2016
No Comments

As millions mark World Diabetes Day in November, two intrepid cyclists, supported by Pelican BioThermal, are almost halfway through their global cycling challenge, helping raise awareness about diabetes.

The pedal-powered project, called "For A Piece Of Cake," is a monumental cycling challenge currently being undertaken by riders Chiara Ricciardi and Riccardo Rocchi, who are covering a total of nearly 11,185 miles from Cesena, Italy to Singapore on board bicycles. Pelican BioThermal, a global leader in temperature-controlled packaging solutions serving the life sciences industry, is providing vital equipment necessary for Riccardi, who suffers from type 1 diabetes, to transport her insulin during their trip. They dubbed their project "For A Piece of Cake" because for Ricciardi and others with type 1 diabetes, a slice of cake is more than a simple pleasure, it's an achievement.

"As an official partner of this remarkable pedal powered project we're honored to provide ongoing support for the riders with our temperature-controlled packaging solutions," said Adam Tetz, Pelican BioThermal's Director of Worldwide Marketing. Raising awareness about diabetes, a condition which affects more than 400 million people worldwide, is critical. Their efforts are inspirational, and we're confident will continue to shine a spotlight on this global health issue."

To maintain temperature stability for her vital diabetic drugs, Pelican BioThermal has supplied its Cr?do ProMedâ„¢, a robust, temperature-controlled portable medical transport bag designed for emergency first responders and medical couriers to ensure protected pharmaceuticals remain intact. Like the riders, the product is continuing to perform well when facing the rigors of such an arduous adventure.

"Making such a journey with diabetes on a bicycle is a big opportunity to show how this disease shouldn't stop anybody," explained Ricciardi. "One challenge is keeping my insulin cool: we have to plan our trip in order to find a freezer every 73 hours! A safe and reliable method for storing and transporting insulin, like the Cr?do ProMed supplied by Pelican BioThermal, is vital to our trip and we know we can rely on it."

Having already spent over 120 days in the saddle, Chiara and Riccardo, who aim to cycle to Singapore by June 2017, will both be bicycle bound on World Diabetes Day on November 14. The annual designated day, which raises awareness about the disease, is pivotal as the International Diabetes Federation estimates 1 in 2 adults currently living with diabetes -- as many as 193 million people worldwide -- are unaware of their condition. Most of these cases are type 2 diabetes.

Pelican BioThermal's Cr?do ProMedâ„¢ is part of Pelican BioThermal's full suite of products and services which offer longevity, reusability and sustainability to provide the safe transport of pharmaceuticals, tissue, diagnostics/clinical trials, vaccines and blood samples.
