U-Haul Leverages Transplace for Transportation Management System and Services

Leading Moving and Storage Company to Utilize Technology Company's SaaS TMS to Efficiently Manage Transportation Operations for U-Box Moving and Storage Containers

February 16, 2016 (Dallas, TX)
Transplace, a leading provider of transportation management services and logistics technology, today announced that U-Haul International (Nasdaq: UHAL) has implemented the company's proprietary software-as-a-service (SaaS) transportation management system (TMS) to improve operational efficiencies and effectively manage its U-Box shipments. U-Haul utilizes Transplace's web-based technology and business intelligence (BI) analytics to optimize its U-Box transportation network, view shipments in real-time and reduce overall transportation costs.

U-Haul's U-Box program delivers and transports moving and storage containers that allow customers to load their belongings and schedule pickup of the container for delivery to a new location or storage facility. U-Haul utilizes the Transplace system to take advantage of consolidation and optimization opportunities across its U-Box network, which includes about 50,000 containers shipped between approximately 1,500 U-Haul facilities.

"The U-Box program has grown quickly over the last three years, and with the Transplace TMS solution, now has optimal technology to support real-time visibility and planning, as well as enable consolidation and other optimization opportunities across our entire network," said U-Box Project Manager Chasan Royer at U-Haul in Phoenix. "After a thorough search for a solutions provider, we chose Transplace for its comprehensive logistics technology, reporting capabilities and operational support."

Using real-time network views, U-Haul's U-Box team makes better-informed decisions in order to run its business both competitively and cost-effectively as it continues to grow. Additionally, U-Box takes advantage of Transplace's Freight Allocation Module (FAM), which gives carriers instant visibility to available freight and allow them to quickly and easily bid on loads. By having real-time access to transportation services information, U-Box will be able to quickly and efficiently find, screen and classify transportation carriers with the air-ride equipment necessary for its shipments.

"Transplace's Freight Allocation Module is an extremely useful tool that allows our customers to identify capacity with their preferred transportation partners and determine the lowest cost per load and per lane," said Vincent Chiodo, senior vice president, sales, Transplace. "We are truly excited about the opportunity to partner with U-Haul and deliver our transportation management best practices, end-to-end order visibility and cutting-edge technology via a software-as-a-service model."

Australian supermarket chain rolls out AI-powered grocery carts

Grocery shoppers in Australia will soon be able to zip in and out of the store in record time, bypassing the lines for cashiers or self-checkout kiosks altogether. They can just walk in, make their selections, and walk out with their bags in hand.

The secret to this express shopping experience is the “Caper Cart,” an AI (artificial intelligence)-powered smart trolley from San Francisco-based Instacart. In its first deployment in the Asia Pacific (APAC) region, the system is being tested by Coles Supermarkets, a food and beverage retailer with more than 1,800 grocery and liquor stores throughout the country.

How green is your glue?

If you’re looking to make the packaging process more eco-friendly, the obvious place to start is with the box itself. And that’s exactly what Salt Lake City-based Packsize did when it made its initial foray into sustainable packaging back in 2002. That year, the company launched its first product, an innovative on-demand packaging system designed to reduce cardboard waste (and the need for filler material) by creating a right-sized box for each shipment.

Now the company is ready for the next step: greening up the glue.
