PILOT PROMOTES BRIAN FLOWER TO VICE PRESIDENT OF OPERATIONS

Pilot Freight Services (Pilot), a worldwide provider of transportation and logistics services, announces the promotion of Brian Flower to vice president of operations. In his new role, Flower will be responsible for setting all operational policies and key performance indicators as well as defining standardized station procedures. Additionally, he will establish pricing protocols, manage vendor relationships, and oversee TSA compliance.

Flower honed his operational strengths at both the regional and district levels throughout his almost decade long tenure with Pilot. As vice president of operations, he will continue to focus on optimizing efficiencies across Pilot's vast network and applying systems to meet the needs of customers. Prior to his promotion, Flower served as the northeast regional vice president managing, supporting and mentoring district managers within the territory. Previously, Flower was district manager of Pilot's Newark, NJ (EWR) station and with his leadership in 2010 the facility became the company's first corporate certified cargo screening facility (CCSF). Flower helped model the program for the company as it expanded to other stations. He has provided a link for other stations to IT by testing company initiatives before launch. Flower's team has repeatedly earned a top spot in operations excellence rankings year after year and has been the recipient of four peer-nominated awards celebrating the station's efforts.

"Pilot is dedicated to developing talent from within our organization," said Zach Pollock, chief operating officer of Pilot Freight Services. "Brian has repeatedly demonstrated a commitment to operational excellence along with cultivating these corporate priorities among his team members."

Australian supermarket chain rolls out AI-powered grocery carts

Grocery shoppers in Australia will soon be able to zip in and out of the store in record time, bypassing the lines for cashiers or self-checkout kiosks altogether. They can just walk in, make their selections, and walk out with their bags in hand.

The secret to this express shopping experience is the “Caper Cart,” an AI (artificial intelligence)-powered smart trolley from San Francisco-based Instacart. In its first deployment in the Asia Pacific (APAC) region, the system is being tested by Coles Supermarkets, a food and beverage retailer with more than 1,800 grocery and liquor stores throughout the country.

How green is your glue?

If you’re looking to make the packaging process more eco-friendly, the obvious place to start is with the box itself. And that’s exactly what Salt Lake City-based Packsize did when it made its initial foray into sustainable packaging back in 2002. That year, the company launched its first product, an innovative on-demand packaging system designed to reduce cardboard waste (and the need for filler material) by creating a right-sized box for each shipment.
