A M King Completes 169,338-square-foot Expansion for Cheney Brothers, Inc.

Statesville, NC—A M King, a fully integrated Design-Build firm, has completed a large-scale expansion project for Cheney Brothers, Inc.'s Statesville distribution center. The 169,338-square-foot cold storage addition on the 30-acre site allows the company to expand its refrigeration capabilities in this region and brings the total building square footage to 265,000. It is estimated that more than 100 full-time jobs will be added at the facility located within the Statesville Business Park.

Cheney Brothers, Inc. (CBI), a Rivera Beach, FL-based food distributor, was founded in 1925. In 2016, the company purchased Pate Dawson Co., thereby acquiring three distribution facilities in Statesville, Goldsboro and Greensboro, NC. The goal is to significantly extend its reach north. Brands include Duck Deli, Acento Latino, Fronte, Belgium Nuts, Cheney Brothers Estate and Grand Western Steaks.

A M King designed and built this sizeable expansion project for CBI, which incorporates a state-of-the art penthouse refrigeration system zoned to support numerous interior temperature zones; robotic truck wash center; fueling station; guardhouse; new fire protection systems and a complex sitework package. The Keith Corporation (TKC), a N.C.-based developer, served as program manager for the project.

The project also included renovation of a 34,686-square-foot existing dry warehouse and conversion of a 37,388-square-foot existing cold storage space to ambient temperature storage. Notable was the development of a 2,000-square-foot, full commercial test kitchen; construction of a new interior office mezzanine and 25 new dock doors; installation of a 2,000 kW 480V 3-phase generator and a complete LED light overhaul. A M King used 900 tons of steel and 7.534 cubic yards of concrete during the expansion and renovation, all while assisting the client with maintaining ongoing operations.

"It's been great working with TKC as an existing client and CBI as a new client on this exceptional food distribution center," says A M King Vice President Dan Crist. "We are excited to be a part of CBI's growth in the region and building a first-class distribution center to serve new and existing clients."

"It was a pleasure partnering with A M King," said Warren Newell, Cheney Brothers Director of Development. "We look forward to the next project in Greensboro, NC, which will start in just a few short weeks."
