ODU Signs Agreement with Navis and Port of Virginia to Offer Training Courses Featuring N4 TOS

June 5, 2018
No Comments

Oakland, CA—June 05, 2018—The Port of Virginia and the Maritime and Supply Chain Management program at Old Dominion University (ODU) are collaborating with Navis, a part of Cargotec Corporation and provider of operational technologies and services that unlock greater performance and efficiency for the world's leading organizations across the shipping supply chain, to offer software training courses using the N4 terminal operating system. The new course offering will integrate Navis' cutting-edge technology, currently used at the Port of Virginia, into ODU's curriculum, enhancing students' data analytics skills and preparing them for future employment in the maritime industry.

The agreement, signed by ODU provost and vice president of Academic Affairs, Augustine Agho, and the CEO and executive director of the Port of Virginia, John Reinhart, allows students and faculty to use the port's software to gain real-world experience. "This is a great example of an industry/education partnership," said Agho. "Students get to learn first-hand from people in the maritime industry, which is something most business schools don't have."

The collaboration among the Maritime and Supply Chain program at the Strome College of Business, the Port of Virginia, and Navis, aims to train undergraduate and graduate students on the port's terminal operating system that manages more than 300 container terminals worldwide. Under the agreement, N4 will be utilized in several courses at ODU beginning the Fall 2018 semester to help students understand the process of managing cargo - removing containers off vessels, helping terminals plan where to put cargo, supporting automation and more. "We are giving students access to state-of-the-art technology and terminal operating software and systems," Reinhart said. "We are pleased to have this educational opportunity for students because it will open up a lot of global opportunities."

"This collaboration gives our students access to the predominant technology used to manage ports," said Jeff Tanner, dean of ODU's Strome College of Business. "It's consistent with our leadership role in maritime trade and port logistics programming."

Susan Gardner, General Manager for North America at Navis, said students will have a chance to intern with Navis and the port. Students who have acquired knowledge of intermodal and port management, and supply chain management at ODU will now have hands-on experience managing N4, providing them a significant advantage in the future global job market where Navis is currently the market leader.

"We see this partnership as a great opportunity to further our relationship with the Port of Virginia while introducing students at ODU to N4," said Gardner. "If students choose to work at the port, they will already be familiar with the system and have the skills necessary to operate N4 to its fullest potential."
