Florida Rock & Tank Lines Chooses PeopleNet

New solutions to help automate processes and improve driver experience

PeopleNet® (www.peoplenetonline.com), a Trimble (NASDAQ: TRMB) Company and leading provider of fleet mobility technology, today announced that Florida Rock & Tank Lines, Inc. (FRTL) will install PeopleNet technology in its fleet of nearly 500 trucks.

Jacksonville-based FRTL transports petroleum and other liquid and dry bulk commodities throughout the southeastern United States. FRTL currently operates 21 terminals and has a network of more than 700 drivers. As part of its continued growth, FRTL looked for technology solutions that could help increase efficiencies and improve their bottom line.

One of FRTL's primary reasons for choosing PeopleNet was its Tanker Workflow. This customized workflow automates time-consuming paperwork and integrates information in real time throughout a fleet's operation.

"Prior to implementing PeopleNet's technology, we had a very manual method of delivering petroleum," said Jim Anderson, Vice President of Safety & Risk Management for FRTL. "With PeopleNet's Tanker Workflow, we have automated our process to deliver the right amount of product each time, which not only increases the accuracy in our billing but also reduces the risk of overfilling customer storage tanks."

In addition to solutions that increase automation, FRTL drivers will also be equipped with the PeopleNet ConnectedTablet™ ruggedized tablet. This mobile computer is designed to operate both within the typical in-cab environment and outside the cab, so drivers can use the tablet throughout the job site without having to repeatedly climb in and out of the truck.

"We want to equip our drivers with the latest and greatest technology," said Anderson. "With PeopleNet, our individual drivers have access to solutions that make their jobs easier and allow our entire fleet to work more efficiently."

Australian supermarket chain rolls out AI-powered grocery carts

Grocery shoppers in Australia will soon be able to zip in and out of the store in record time, bypassing the lines for cashiers or self-checkout kiosks altogether. They can just walk in, make their selections, and walk out with their bags in hand.

The secret to this express shopping experience is the “Caper Cart,” an AI (artificial intelligence)-powered smart trolley from San Francisco-based Instacart. In its first deployment in the Asia Pacific (APAC) region, the system is being tested by Coles Supermarkets, a food and beverage retailer with more than 1,800 grocery and liquor stores throughout the country.

How green is your glue?

If you’re looking to make the packaging process more eco-friendly, the obvious place to start is with the box itself. And that’s exactly what Salt Lake City-based Packsize did when it made its initial foray into sustainable packaging back in 2002. That year, the company launched its first product, an innovative on-demand packaging system designed to reduce cardboard waste (and the need for filler material) by creating a right-sized box for each shipment.

Now the company is ready for the next step: greening up the glue.
