Investment as Retail Fulfillment Specialist Expands West Coast Operation

Fulfillment specialist Coast to Coast Fulfillment Inc., which opened its second warehouse in California a year ago, has announced further $2m investment to double its West Coast base on the back of record contract wins.

Investment as Retail Fulfillment Specialist Expands West Coast Operation

The 23-year established Rhode Island firm is opening the new 35,000 sq. ft. location at the City of Industry, Los Angeles County, California on March 15. The new facility supplements the firm's 80,000 sq. ft. center in West Greenwich that employs 31 people in addition to dozens more part-time employees to handle spikes in demand.

"Our California base has been open just one year, but already additional business demand has forced us to double our capacity. Many new and existing clients have seen the benefits of our ability to rapidly turn around goods arriving by sea freight from Asia in a dedicated West Coast facility. Many clients have seen the benefits of our ability to quickly process orders here in Rhode Island too," commented Coast to Coast president Hermond Ghazarian.

"Our growth has come largely, but not exclusively, from our fashion jewelry clients who require unique order processing system and rapid distribution and replenishment to national retailers. Every week we see thousands of new items in inventory, process them according to hundreds of purchase orders, then ship to distribution centers and retail stores in all 50 states.

In addition to fulfillment services for fashion jewelry and accessories manufacturers, Coast to Coast also handles the retail distribution across the entire United States for cosmetics, food supplements, medical products, housewares, clothing, and electronics.

The business's 30 clients including political campaign merchandise fulfillment, such as that for the 'Decision 2016' Hillary Clinton presidential campaign, and President Obama's 2012 campaign. Retail clients include manufacturers of fashion accessories, toys, medical devices, sailing equipment and numerous health & beauty products. The firm has carved a niche in providing quick, accurate and cost-effective picking, sorting, packing, and delivery to national retailers — sometimes of thousands of individual orders daily.

Coast to Coast also has a number of customers from overseas, with UK, European, Chinese and Australian firms using its facility as their US warehouse and customer-service base.

"We have a niche providing a high-quality, tailored service to clients who have big retail contracts in the USA, but we also act as a warehouse and fulfillment provider for e-commerce customers," said Jeff Wyant, co-founder and director of Coast to Coast, who leads the firm's business development.

"We're growing our UK and European client base through international trade and marketing activities, essentially exporting our services to overseas firms and bringing the work here to Rhode Island and California," added Mr Wyant.

Australian supermarket chain rolls out AI-powered grocery carts

Grocery shoppers in Australia will soon be able to zip in and out of the store in record time, bypassing the lines for cashiers or self-checkout kiosks altogether. They can just walk in, make their selections, and walk out with their bags in hand.

The secret to this express shopping experience is the “Caper Cart,” an AI (artificial intelligence)-powered smart trolley from San Francisco-based Instacart. In its first deployment in the Asia Pacific (APAC) region, the system is being tested by Coles Supermarkets, a food and beverage retailer with more than 1,800 grocery and liquor stores throughout the country.

How green is your glue?

If you’re looking to make the packaging process more eco-friendly, the obvious place to start is with the box itself. And that’s exactly what Salt Lake City-based Packsize did when it made its initial foray into sustainable packaging back in 2002. That year, the company launched its first product, an innovative on-demand packaging system designed to reduce cardboard waste (and the need for filler material) by creating a right-sized box for each shipment.

Now the company is ready for the next step: greening up the glue.
