Navis N4 Terminal Operating System Deployed at Matson Terminals in Alaska

December 6, 2016
No Comments

Navis, a part of Cargotec Corporation, and provider of operational technologies and services that unlock greater performance and efficiency for the world's leading organizations across the shipping supply chain, today announced that Matson, a leading U.S. carrier in the Pacific, has successfully implemented the Navis N4 terminal operating system (TOS) at the organization's three ports in Alaska to improve operations and increase efficiency.

Matson is an important player in the economy of Alaska, providing residents and businesses with access to essential cargo, such as groceries, cars and building materials. Matson acquired Horizon Lines' operations in Alaska in May of 2015, including its port terminals, vessels and equipment, and has since made significant investments to fully integrate the Alaska operations into Matson's Pacific network. The company currently handles approximately 70,000 containers in the Alaska market annually.

Previously, Matson's Alaska terminal operations ran a combination of Navis SPARCS alongside a homegrown operating system. Following a thorough evaluation of TOS providers, Matson selected N4, due to Navis' strong track record of success partnering with terminal operators to optimize operations, as well as to standardize technology use across terminal networks. As part of the implementation process, Navis and Matson collaborated closely, working to configure, test and reconfigure N4 to ensure optimum performance at the three Alaska sites. The migration to N4 has allowed the three terminals to consolidate operating systems in order to improve operational efficiencies and reduce support costs.

Matson's Honolulu terminal was already using N4, meaning its deployment in Alaska allowed the company to maintain the software standard across its network.

"We were proud to commit our support to a series of terminals so vital to Alaskan trade," emphasized Chuck Schneider, VP and General Manager, Americas with Navis. "We view this partnership as further evidence that the N4 TOS is the right choice for terminals of all sizes. It is equally important for small and large terminals to have standardized operations across regions, and we are happy to be working with Matson towards that goal."
