THOMASVILLE, N.C. (April 27, 2016) — Old Dominion Freight Line, Inc. has announced its 2016 John Yowell OD Family Spirit Award recipient is Bill Goins, an employee at the company's Indianapolis Service Center.
The award recognizes an employee who embodies the OD Family Spirit through selfless dedication to helping others. The company created the award to preserve the legacy of the late John Yowell, former OD Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer, and his perpetual spirit of giving.
"The Family Spirit Award honors Bill's unflagging commitment to helping others," said David Congdon, President and CEO, Old Dominion Freight Line. "His generosity is rooted in his faith, family, church and community, and his work on behalf of the less fortunate extends from local to international."
With Bill's expertise and passion for transportation and logistics, he spends his free time repairing and maintaining vehicles for single mothers and widows in his church and community. He delivered loads of relief supplies to stricken areas after Hurricane Katrina.
Bill has performed mission work in Haiti for 27 years. He has participated in Christmas bags for Haiti since 2004, sending more than 100,000 bags full of gifts for children. He also sends containers of relief supplies to the country each year, and began a lunch program for Haitian school children. Bill's entire family is also involved with his Haitian relief efforts, including his daughter and son-in-law who live in Haiti as full-time missionaries.
Bill joined the OD Family in April 2014 as a linehaul driver. His reliability, unflagging courtesy, and team-first attitude have earned him Employee of the Month, and Indianapolis Employee of the Year for 2015. His industry experience and impressive skills as a driver made Bill the Indiana Truck Driving Grand Champion, and earned him a place representing OD in the national competition.
