alliances: who's sealed a deal

  • A digital passage to India. RedPrairie Corp., a leader in global supply chain technology solutions, and Sonata Software Ltd., one of India's leading software services companies, have announced a strategic agreement whereby Sonata will market, implement and support RedPrairie's DigitaLogistix Supply Chain Execution suite in India and other parts of Asia. The first implementation under this agreement is currently in process at Hindustan Lever, the Indian division of global foods and personal care product giant Unilever. Under the agreement, Sonata will be a value-added reseller for RedPrairie throughout Asia, with responsibility for sales, marketing, implementation and customer support for RedPrairie's full supply chain execution suite.
  • Raise your glass. Symbol Technologies Inc., a global leader in enterprise mobility solutions, has teamed up with Vermont Information Processing Inc. to deploy Symbol handheld computers to the delivery and pre-sales mobile workforce of Monarch Beverage Co. Inc., a major beer, wine and liquor distributor based in Indianapolis. The handheld computing solution, built around the Symbol SPT 1800 ruggedized handheld computer and Vermont Information Processing software, enables salespeople and drivers to capture critical market data on the spot and transmit it electronically back to Monarch's host computer, eliminating the need for redundant data entry by back-office staff and allowing faster and more accurate order invoicing.
  • Monitoring the flow. During the next few months, Swisslog, in partnership with LOCANIS, will implement a warehouse management solution with integrated goods tracking functionality for Hassia & Luisen Mineralquellen Bad Vilbel GmbH & Co., a mineral water supplier based in Hesse, Germany. The order includes Swisslog's WarehouseManager system, LOCANIS' G-Track solution, and the corresponding IT hardware, for a total of three locations. This new system enables Hassia & Luisen to manage its block storage more efficiently, minimize the short-shipment ratio and track individual lots in line with EU Directive 178/2002.
  • Surround sound. Nature's Best, the largest privately owned wholesaler/retailer in the natural products industry, has installed Vocollect's voice-directed distribution system at its 343,000-square-foot warehouse facility in Brea, Calif. The company, which is using Vocollect's Talkman system for its piece and case picking operations, is now extending voice to its line loading (building pallets for shipment) activities and will be using voice to manage put-away in the warehouse within the next three months.

Survey: In-store shopping sentiment up 21%

E-commerce activity remains robust, but a growing number of consumers are reintegrating physical stores into their shopping journeys in 2024, emphasizing the need for retailers to focus on omnichannel business strategies. That’s according to an e-commerce study from Ryder System, Inc., released this week.

Ryder surveyed more than 1,300 consumers for its 2024 E-Commerce Consumer Study and found that 61% of consumers shop in-store “because they enjoy the experience,” a 21% increase compared to results from Ryder’s 2023 survey on the same subject. The current survey also found that 35% shop in-store because they don’t want to wait for online orders in the mail (up 4% from last year), and 15% say they shop in-store to avoid package theft (up 8% from last year).

Reinke moves from TIA to IANA in top office

Transportation industry veteran Anne Reinke will become president & CEO of trade group the Intermodal Association of North America (IANA) at the end of the year, stepping into the position from her previous post leading third party logistics (3PL) trade group the Transportation Intermediaries Association (TIA), both organizations said today.

Reinke will take her new job upon the retirement of Joni Casey at the end of the year. Casey had announced in July that she would step down after 27 years at the helm of IANA.

Krish Nathan is the Americas CEO for SDI Element Logic, a provider of turnkey automation solutions and sortation systems. Nathan joined SDI Industries in 2000 and honed his project management and engineering expertise in developing and delivering complex material handling solutions. In 2014, he was appointed CEO, and in 2022, he led the search for a strategic partner that could expand SDI’s capabilities. This culminated in the acquisition of SDI by Element Logic, with SDI becoming the Americas branch of the company.

A native of the U.K., Nathan received his bachelor’s degree in manufacturing engineering from Coventry University and has studied executive leadership at Cranfield University.

Logistics gives back: September 2024

  • Toyota Material Handling and its nationwide network of dealers showcased their commitment to improving their local communities during the company’s annual “Lift the Community Day.” Since 2021, Toyota associates have participated in an annual day-long philanthropic event held near Toyota’s Columbus, Indiana, headquarters. This year, the initiative expanded to include participation from Toyota’s dealers, increasing the impact on communities throughout the U.S. A total of 324 Toyota associates completed 2,300 hours of community service during this year’s event.

  • Truck leasing and fleet management services provider Fleet Advantage hosted its “Kids Around the Corner Foundation” back-to-school backpack drive in July. During the event, company associates assembled 200 backpacks filled with essential school supplies for high school-age students. The backpacks were then delivered to Henderson Behavioral Health’s Youth & Family Services location in Tamarac, Florida.

Hyster-Yale partners with Dept. of Defense’s SkillBridge program

After years in the military, service members and their spouses can find the transition to civilian life difficult. For many, a valuable support on that journey is the U.S. Department of Defense (DOD) SkillBridge program. During their final 180 days of service, participants in the program are connected with companies that provide them with civilian work experience and training. There is no cost to those companies while the service member continues receiving military compensation and benefits.

Among the SkillBridge program’s supporters is Hyster-Yale Materials Handling, which provides lift trucks and technology solutions, primarily under the Hyster and Yale brand names. Hyster-Yale and its independently owned dealers partner with SkillBridge to recruit and train current service members, specifically for positions as skilled technicians.
