Alliance Shippers Inc. Receives US EPA 2017 SmartWay Excellence Award

November 28, 2017
No Comments

Englewood Cliffs, NJ—Alliance Shippers Inc. was honored with a SmartWay® Excellence Award from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency as an industry leader in freight supply chain environmental performance and energy efficiency. Alliance continues to demonstrate top environmental performance by effectively arranging transportation of its' customers freight with environmentally efficient modes of transportation. To that end, Alliance chooses to utilize railroad intermodal services for the line-haul segment (resulting in a carbon footprint of 56 to 71% as compared to a traditional movement by highway) and places high priority on choosing SmartWay certified carriers for the originating and final mile movement of customer cargo. Alliance transports temperature sensitive cargo in its fleet of 2,100 state of the art CARB compliant 53' refrigerated trailers; all of which are equipped for wireless remote control of the refrigeration/heating unit. This allows for total remote operating authority to start, stop, adjust temperatures as necessary and monitor fuel burn and levels. Alliance has recently installed solar panels on the roofs of its refrigerated trailers to reduce dependency on battery power as the engines call for electrical support in the operation of the cooling/heating process. Additionally, Alliance has installed roof top solar panels on its 27 acre, 360,000 square foot, 186 door cross dock operation located in Keasbey, NJ., reducing dependency on sourcing electricity from the local utility grid. Companywide, Alliance encourages responsible use of energy, recycling and reduction of paper consumption at each of its operating and sales locations located throughout North America.

"Alliance Shippers Inc. is committed to continuously work toward arranging cleaner and more energy efficient transportation services for the customers it services", said Larry Henry, Vice-President Logistics & Special Projects." Alliance began its' participation in the SmartWay program in 2005 and was first Certified in 2006 said Henry". Since then, Alliance has maintained that certification consistently through the current year. "Alliance Shippers Inc. is honored to have been chosen as a 2017 SmartWay Excellence Award recipient in recognition of our commitment to sustainable efforts to achieve our emission goals," said Henry.

Alliance Shippers Inc. was one of 62 companies to receive this distinction, representing the best environmental performers of SmartWay's 3600 Partners. The Excellence Awardees were honored at the American Trucking Associations Management & Exhibition Annual Conference held in Orlando, Florida on October 23, 2017.

"Since 2004, EPA and the business community have collaborated through the SmartWay Partnership to reduce the economic and environmental costs of goods movement, a vital sector of our national economy," said Christopher Grundler, Director of the EPA's Office of Transportation & Air Quality. "This year's award-winning freight carriers, shippers and third-party logistics companies demonstrate that they can move more goods, more miles, while using less fuel. These firms are not only serving the growing needs of their—they are also doing their part to keep our environment clean and protect human health."
