UPS expands in Greater Houston

UPS' new package delivery facility in northwest Houston is operating at full capacity and has created 575 full- and part-time jobs in the region, the Atlanta-based company said January 17.

The Houston facility was part of a 2018 project in which UPS opened 22 new or retro-fit automated facilities around the world. Located in the city's Willowbrook area, the facility increases UPS' delivery fleet serving the country's fourth most populated city, UPS said.

The 258,000 square-foot operation includes a retail customer service center, truck wash with a water reclamation system, and an automotive repair shop that sits on 68 acres. The facility is powered by highly automated technology that rapidly moves packages through the scanning and sorting process, capturing data to increase delivery accuracy and adding flexibility to respond to customer needs, UPS said. In addition, UPS Smart Label applicators place detailed shipping labels on packages at a speed of three per second, which the company says enables more efficient processing by UPS employees for local delivery.

The facility is also equipped with temperature and monitoring services that can benefit the region's healthcare and life sciences businesses, according to UPS.

"The new Willowbrook package processing facility is yet another key addition to the UPS network that connects businesses of all sizes and consumers throughout the world," Deryl Hill, president of UPS's Red River District, which includes Texas and Oklahoma, said in a prepared statement. "UPS continues to increase its capacity in Texas to meet the expanding shipping needs of our commercial and residential customers across this fast-growing state."
