Material handling equipment provider Schaefer Systems International Inc. has opened an expanded North American headquarters facility in North Carolina, and will hire up to 200 employees to meet the growing needs of customers confronting rapid growth of e-commerce volumes and labor shortages in their DCs.

The expanded building opened Nov. 1 and has been housing about 200 existing employees serving the company's automation and its packaging systems divisions throughout the U.S. and Canada.

The new facility is intended to increase collaboration among the firm's automation, information technology (IT), software, and packaging groups, according to Christoph Schenk, CEO of Schaefer's Automation Systems Division. The company now plans to hire an additional 200 new IT positions that will focus on application engineering development.

Schaefer is a division of the Neunkirchen, Germany-based SSI Schaefer Group, and provides automation systems and warehouse management software, material handling products, reusable packaging systems, and waste technology products for the material handling market.

ReposiTrak, a global food traceability network operator, will partner with Upshop, a provider of store operations technology for food retailers, to create an end-to-end grocery traceability solution that reaches from the supply chain to the retail store, the firms said today.
