alliances: who's sealed a deal

  • Post time. Logistics software specialist Kewill has entered into a partnership with Newgistics, a company that provides postalbased small parcel delivery and returns management services. The arrangement, which is designed to save customers money and streamline the shipping process, lets Kewill's customers add Newgistics as an outbound carrier to their Kewill multicarrier parcel shipping software so they can take advantage of Newgistics' zoneskipping service. Under that service, Newgistics picks up clients' shipments and delivers them to its sorting hub, where it combines packages from multiple origins and manages their insertion into the U.S. Postal Service network at a significant discount.
  • The gloves are on. Warehouse Specialists Inc. (WSI), a national provider of integrated logistics and supply chain solutions, has entered into a strategic partnership with Kid Glove Service, an Indianapolisbased transportation and warehousing company. The partnership will provide Kid Glove customers with access to WSI's national distribution network, while WSI customers will gain access to Kid Glove's distribution resources in the Midwest.
  • School rule. Oxford University Press, the world's largest universityowned publishing house, has boosted performance and cut operating costs by implementing RedPrairie's Workforce Management Solution. The software was installed at the publisher's U.K. distribution center. In the first week alone, order throughput rose by 19 percent. Annual order fulfillment costs have dropped 27 percent.
  • Rising like one. Phoenix Contact, a manufacturer and distributor of electronic products and automation technologies, has installed a new automated storage and retrieval system from viastore systems. The fouraisle miniload AS/RS is being used at Phoenix Contact's distribution center in Harrisburg, Pa.
  • Tracking in paradise. The State of Hawaii Department of Agriculture and the Hawaii Farm Bureau are partnering on a threeyear RFID program. The program, known as the Hawaii Produce Traceability initiative, uses UPM Raflatac RFID inlays to track and trace fresh produce throughout the state's food supply chain. The program is designed to promote food safety by providing product visibility down to the farm or even field level.
  • Going yard. AeroScout has teamed up with Psion Teklogix to provide an asset management and tracking system for Glovis Alabama, a consolidation facility for the Hyundai Automotive Group. The new system uses wireless computing products from Psion Teklogix and AeroScout's WiFi Active RFID Yard Management solution to track containers and yard vehicles as they enter, travel within, and leave the facility's yard.
  • A turn for the better. Logistics service provider Schenker Canada has chosen the SmartTurn Inventory and Warehouse Management System to track its inventory and streamline the delivery process. The SmartTurn solution is offered on a softwareasaservice (SaaS) basis.
  • Port side. The Georgia Port Authority and the South Carolina State Port Authority have chosen engineering firm Moffatt & Nichols to manage the initial stages of the Jasper Ocean Terminal construction project. The Jasper Ocean Terminal, which is being developed jointly by Georgia and South Carolina, will be located on the Savannah River.
  • Realtime fleet management. Cadec Global, a supplier of fleet management solutions, and Blue Sky Technologies, a specialist in realtime supply chain software, have teamed up to develop software to help truck fleets collect data needed for decision making. The first product of the partnership is Mobius Insight, an addon to Cadec's Mobius TTS fleet management software that provides preconfigured dashboards for transportation executives on safety, customer service, compliance, maintenance, and costs.
  • I'll take Manhattan. We Pack Logistics, a thirdparty logistics service provider that operates 16 facilities throughout Texas and North Carolina, has gone live with Manhattan Associates' ILS Integrated Logistics Solutions suite. Built on Microsoft .NET, the software suite includes billing management, labor management, transportation lifecycle management, and slotting optimization solutions.
  • That's a relief. APICS has joined the American Logistics Aid Network (ALAN). ALAN connects relief agencies responding to disasters with resources within the supply chain community.

The New Hampshire-based cargo terminal orchestration technology vendor Lynxis LLC today said it has acquired Tedivo LLC, a provider of software to visualize and streamline vessel operations at marine terminals.

Concordia Damen launches next-gen offshore wind vessels

The Dutch ship building company Concordia Damen has worked with four partner firms to build two specialized vessels that will serve the offshore wind industry by transporting large, and ever growing, wind turbine components, the company said today.

The first ship, Rotra Horizon, launched yesterday at Jiangsu Zhenjiang Shipyard, and its sister ship, Rotra Futura, is expected to be delivered to client Amasus in 2025. The project involved a five-way collaboration between Concordia Damen and Amasus, deugro Danmark, Siemens Gamesa, and DEKC Maritime.

Port of Oakland import volume approaches pre-pandemic level

The Port of Oakland’s container volume continued its growth in the fourth quarter, as total container volume rose 10% over the same period in 2023, and loaded imports grew for the 12th straight month, approaching pre-pandemic levels.

Specifically, loaded import volume rose 11.2% in October 2024, compared to October 2023, as port operators processed 81,498 TEUs (twenty-foot containers), versus 73,281 TEUs in 2023, the port said today.

Port of Oakland to modernize wharves with $50 million grant

The Port of Oakland has been awarded $50 million from the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Maritime Administration (MARAD) to modernize wharves and terminal infrastructure at its Outer Harbor facility, the port said today.

Those upgrades would enable the Outer Harbor to accommodate Ultra Large Container Vessels (ULCVs), which are now a regular part of the shipping fleet calling on West Coast ports. Each of these ships has a handling capacity of up to 24,000 TEUs (20-foot containers) but are currently restricted at portions of Oakland’s Outer Harbor by aging wharves which were originally designed for smaller ships.
