As part of a continuing effort to respond to customer demand for sustainable products, Sealed Air Corp. has introduced Restore Mushroom Packaging. A 100-percent renewable protective packaging solution, Restore packaging uses the power of mycelium (the root-like structure of mushrooms) to bind agricultural waste — like cotton fiber, corn stalks, and seed husks — into a strong, all-natural composite. This material is poured into custom designed forms, where it grows into its final shape. After about 45 days of growth, the material is heated in an oven to stop the spores from growing and to bring it to the proper consistency. The result is a dependable and renewable custom-engineered cushion, Sealed Air says.
The high-performance Sealed Air Restore cushions are completely biodegradable and home compostable, allowing for easy and environmentally sound disposal. The company notes that unlike many products made from renewable materials, these cushions are "cost-neutral."
