It used to be that companies that had to measure and weigh both boxes and irregular-sized items had to have two different dimension scanning systems. That all changed when Quantronix introduced the Cubiscan 125 two years ago.
Cubiscan 125 can be used to determine the height, length, and weight of any box or item. The system uses ultrasound sensors located on the edges of the dimensioning system to measure and weigh boxes. For odd-sized items, an operator can pass the equipment's arm over the item. Infrared sensors in the arm detect the dimensions and display them on a screen. Length and height can be determined down to 0.05 of an inch and weight down to 0.005 of a pound. This information is then fed into the company's load planning system to determine carton size. It can also be sent to the user's warehouse management system to help determine slotting and plan storage space needs, among other applications.
Cubiscan 125 is a static dimensioning system, meaning an item has to be placed on the device for the information to be obtained (as opposed to an in-motion system, which determines the dimensional information as the item passes below it on a conveyor). It is, however, a mobile unit. The dimensioning system sits on a cart that can be wheeled to locations throughout the warehouse.
