The South Carolina Ports Authority recorded its busiest July in the port's history, moving 119,700 pier containers, up 5 percent compared to a year-ago, officials said Thursday.
SCPA posted strong results at both its container terminals and inland ports, officials reported. The port's Wando Welch and North Charleston terminals handled a record 210,542 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs), up 5 percent from a year ago, while its inland Port Greer posted 15,338 rail moves--up 57 percent from a year ago--and inland Port Dillan reported 2,889 rail moves during the month, up 122 percent from a year ago. Inland Port Dillon is in its second year of operation.
The July results follow a record 2019 fiscal year, with cargo volumes up nearly 9 percent.
"We accomplished so much in fiscal year 2019, including record cargo volumes and rail moves. We are excited to see fiscal year 2020 starting off so strong," S.C. Ports Authority President and CEO Jim Newsome said in a statement. "Our entire maritime community—especially those working our terminals and running our operations—make these achievements possible."
