Port Houston continues to see increases in tonnage, with total tonnage up 9 percent for the year through April, port officials said this week.
Total container twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) was up 13 percent for the year, including year-over-year growth of 15 percent in April, officials also said. Steel imports through all Port Authority facilities showed strength as well, increasing 31 percent for the year compared to the same period in 2018.
Officials said a surge in resin exports is helping to drive growth at the port. Year-to-date, resins exports have grown 38 percent and polyethylene exports have increased 62 percent, officials said.
"The big driver of this growth is the much- anticipated surge in resin exports," Port Houston Executive Director Roger Guenther said in a statement announcing the results. "It is here, and it is solid."
