Titanium Transportation installs BlackBerry Radar on trailers

Asset-based transportation and logistics company Titanium Transportation Group Inc. will outfit its fleet of 1,300 trailers with the BlackBerry Radar location monitoring system in a move to boost efficiency, the company said Wednesday.

Bolton, Ont.-based Titanium seeks to use the tracking system to achieve better utilization of trailers, increase revenue per trailer, and improve profitability, Titanium CEO Ted Daniel said in a release.

Developed by Ottawa, Ont.-based handheld computing pioneer BlackBerry Ltd., BlackBerry Radar is an Internet of Things (IoT)-based system that monitors the location of trailers via global positioning system (GPS) technology and delivers custom, real-time alerts about events such as when a truck has crossed a user-defined area or when a trailer door has opened or closed. The system also provides real-time monitoring of temperature, humidity, and the presence of cargo.

"BlackBerry Radar, with its advanced sensing and communication technologies, as well as cloud-based analytics dashboards, produces near real-time actionable information to fleet managers about the status and location of their trailers and the goods they are carrying," Derek Kuhn, senior vice president, BlackBerry IoT, said in a release. "Furthermore, with its state-of-the-art security technologies, it gives trucking companies like Titanium a peace of mind that their data is secure. BlackBerry Radar encrypts all transmitted data and authenticates device and cloud endpoints."

BlackBerry has been migrating away from its foundation as a handheld-computing vendor by investing in transportation technologies, opening an Autonomous Vehicle Innovation Centre (AVIC) yesterday to work with the company's QNX Software division in developing software for self-driving cars.
