China is investing $160 million this year in a logistics center for the Quinghai-Tibet Railway. The Naqu center is located about 185 miles north of the Tibetan capital of Lhasa. Some 17.1 miles of rail lines will be built for the center, which will include facilities for product processing, storage, and distribution.
Petco, the national retailer of pet food and other pet products, is setting up distribution operations in a vacant 506,200-square-foot building in Braselton, Ga., that formerly served as a Sears DC. Petco is expected to invest $33 million in the new facility, which will employ 217 people at full capacity.
ProLogis is building a new facility in Japan for Hitachi Transport Systems, a company that provides third-party logistics services. Hitachi Transport will operate the 260,000-square-foot facility as a regional DC for The AEON Group, a provider of retail and financial services. The building will be located on Kyushu Island in the Saga Prefecture.
Home décor retailer Crate and Barrel is more than doubling the size of its furniture warehouse near Charlotte, N.C., expanding from 210,000 square feet to over 600,000 square feet. The $23.5 million addition, which is expected to open next June, will add some 70 new jobs. The retailer plans to expand the DC to more than 800,000 square feet in the future.
