  • Power play. DALSA Semiconductor, an international semiconductor and electronics company, has gone live with Adexa's Supply Chain Planner. The solution gives DALSA visibility into its production environment and provides it with the flexibility to improve its customer service. Adexa specializes in integrated supply chain, demand planning and performance management solutions.
  • Super app. Diamond Comics Distribution, the world's largest distributor of English-language comic books, graphic novels and pop-culture merchandise, has selected RedPrairie's Workforce Management solution. The project includes engineered best practices and standards, change management consulting and advanced labor management software.
  • On track. Seton Medical Center in Austin, Texas, has selected RadiantWave, which provides asset tracking solutions, to implement a resource tracking system to account for hospital equipment and patients as they move throughout the facility. The system will use the RedPrairie DLx Mobile Resource Solution and Sonitor UltraSonic indoor positioning hardware to provide precise locating information.
  • G'day, mate. Siemens Ltd.'s Communications Group, a global manufacturer of telecommunications and telephony products, has selected Menlo Worldwide to provide inventory management and customer fulfillment services in Australia. The operations will take place at a new multiclient facility Menlo is opening in Sydney, at which Siemens will be the anchor client.
  • The hunt is over. The Orvis Co., a retailer of high-end sporting equipment, apparel and home furnishings, has selected Manhattan Associates' Integrated Planning Solutions. Orvis will use the Manhattan software to handle advanced planning and replenishment tasks in its multichannel supply chain.
  • Going with the flow. Appliance giant Whirlpool has picked Penske Logistics to be its lead logistics provider. Penske will manage Whirlpool's regional supply chain operations.
  • Pedal to the metal. Gibraltar Industries, a supplier of metal products for the building, vehicle and industrial markets, has expanded its transportation contract with Ryder System. Under the deal, Ryder will provide dedicated contract carriage service for three Gibraltar subsidiaries: Appleton Supply Co., Southeastern Metals Co./SEMCO and DOT Metal Products Inc.
  • Stay, trailer, stay. Walker Snack Foods, the largest potato chip manufacturer in Great Britain and part of PepsiCo, has installed Castell's Salvo dock system at four DCs. The safety system, in use at a total of 89 loading docks across the four facilities, is designed to prevent trailers from leaving docks unexpectedly.
  • Tap is on. Delta Faucet Co. has hired JPMorgan Chase Vastera to handle part of its global trade operations. Under the agreement, the trade management company will manage Delta's NAFTA duty minimization and Harmonized Trade Schedule classification programs.
  • Copy that. Fuji Xerox Australia has selected the HighJump Supply Chain Advantage suite to optimize its nationwide distribution operations. Fuji Xerox is Australia's largest provider of printers, multifunction devices, document management software and supplies. The HighJump software will be implemented in seven sites across the country.
  • All sorted out. Schenker AB, which provides air, sea freight and logistics services, has chosen FKI Logistex to supply a postal sorting system at its distribution center in Stockholm, Sweden. The system will include a high-speed tilt tray sorter featuring several induction units and spiral chutes.
  • Pharm team. White Systems has signed a long-term agreement with Talyst, a company that provides storage and inventory solutions for hospital pharmacies, that will enable Talyst to offer White Systems' space-saving carousels to its customers. Talyst will provide the inventory software for the alliance. The two companies will also collaborate on the development of new carousels specifically for the pharmacy and other healthcare markets.
  • Hats off. Dorfman Pacific, a headwear and handbag company, has deployed Symbol's rugged mobile computers and Wi-Fi network infrastructure at its 275,000-squarefoot warehouse in Stockton, Calif. RedLine Solutions served as the systems integrator on the project. The new hardware and systems are expected to streamline Dorfman Pacific's picking, packing and shipping operations.
  • Seeing the light. GE Consumer and Industrial has contracted with Exel to operate its new national distribution center in Cleveland, Tenn. The 850,000-square-foot facility, which handles GE lighting products, is slated to begin operations in April.

Logistics economy picked up speed in January

Economic activity in the logistics industry expanded in January, growing at its fastest clip in more than two years, according to the latest Logistics Managers’ Index (LMI) report, released this week.

The LMI jumped nearly five points from December to a reading of 62, reflecting continued steady growth in the U.S. economy along with faster-than-expected inventory growth across the sector as retailers, wholesalers, and manufacturers attempted to manage the uncertainty of tariffs and a changing regulatory environment. The January reading represented the fastest rate of expansion since June 2022, the LMI researchers said.

Disrupting the furniture supply chain: An interview with Jay Rogers

As commodities go, furniture presents its share of manufacturing and distribution challenges. For one thing, it's bulky. Second, its main components—wood and cloth—are easily damaged in transit. Third, much of it is manufactured overseas, making for some very long supply chains with all the associated risks. And finally, completed pieces can sit on the showroom floor for weeks or months, tying up inventory dollars and valuable retail space.

In other words, the furniture market is ripe for disruption. And John "Jay" Rogers wants to be the catalyst. In 2022, he cofounded a company that takes a whole new approach to furniture manufacturing—one that leverages the power of 3D printing and robotics. Rogers serves as CEO of that company, Haddy, which essentially aims to transform how furniture—and all elements of the "built environment"—are designed, manufactured, distributed, and, ultimately, recycled.

Generative AI (GenAI) is being deployed by 72% of supply chain organizations, but most are experiencing just middling results for productivity and ROI, according to a survey by Gartner, Inc.

That’s because productivity gains from the use of GenAI for individual, desk-based workers are not translating to greater team-level productivity. Additionally, the deployment of GenAI tools is increasing anxiety among many employees, providing a dampening effect on their productivity, Gartner found.

German 3PL Arvato acquires two U.S. logistics firms

The German third party logistics provider (3PL) Arvato this week acquired the U.S.-headquartered companies Carbel LLC and United Customs Services, saying the move would grow its client base, particularly in the fashion, beauty, and lifestyle segments.

According to Arvato, it made the move in order to better serve the U.S. e-commerce sector, which has experienced high growth rates in recent years and is expected to grow year-on-year by 5% within the next five years.

Supply chain pros are wary of inflation and labor woes

The top worries that supply chain leaders hope to address with new innovations this year include inflationary concerns (68%) and labor shortages (50%), according to a survey on innovation from the third-party logistics provider (3PL) Kenco.

And many of them will have a budget to do it, since 51% of supply chain professionals with existing innovation budgets saw an increase earmarked for 2025, suggesting an even greater emphasis on investing in new technologies to meet rising demand, Kenco said in its “2025 Supply Chain Innovation” survey.
