alliances: who's sealed a deal

  • Seay it is so. SeayCo Integrators Inc., a systems integration company based in Conyers, Ga., has implemented a new Conveyco automated conveyor system at the McLane Co.'s DC in Rocky Mount, N.C. SeayCo also provided the software and controls for the conveyors. This is the fourth collaborative system SeayCo and Conveyco have installed for McLane, which also uses the systems at facilities in Mississippi, Texas and Illinois.
  • The cold hard facts. Orefield Cold Storage (OCS Logistics) has selected RedPrairie software to manage its climate-controlled warehouses and its labor force. OCS Logistics will soon implement RedPrairie's DLx Warehouse Management Solution and DLx Labor for Workforce Performance Management software to optimize its operations. OCS currently operates some 12.8 million cubic feet of frozen, refrigerated and dry-goods storage space and is planning a 100,000-square-foot expansion of its facility in Allentown, Pa., later this year.

    In another deal, American Roland Food Corp. plans to install RedPrairie's DLx WMS and DLx Labor, as well as DLx Transportation software to manage inventory, transportation and personnel at a new food distribution center in New Jersey.
  • Gaining Lever-age. Unilever has contracted with IBM for procurement services. Under the five-year agreement, IBM will transform and manage strategic sourcing and procurement operations of indirect materials and services for Unilever's North American operations. IBM will work with Unilever to reduce costs, optimize procurement processes and deploy analytical tools and process methodologies.
  • Merv-a-lous choice. The Mervyns department store chain has chosen AL Systems to upgrade its supply chain order fulfillment systems at DCs in Fremont and Ontario, Calif. AL Systems will provide Mervyns with the latest version of its DynaPack paperless picking and packing solution, as well as software and services to interface with a new warehouse management system provided by Manhattan Associates.
  • The eyes have it. MODO Eyewear, a company that designs high-end eyewear sold through optical boutiques and nationwide retail chains, has selected DHL as its exclusive contract logistics provider. DHL will support the entire MODO supply chain, including importation of finished goods, inventory management, warehousing, picking and packing, labeling, track and trace, returns management, and next-day delivery.
  • Comes with a lot of baggage. FKI Logistex has been awarded a $40 million contract for a baggage handling system at Terminal 2 of the new Shanghai Pudong International Airport in China. The system, scheduled for completion next year, will consist of three tilt-tray sorters and an early bag storage area that routes bags to a special carousel for holding. The entire system is designed to meet the baggage needs of the 22 million passengers expected through the facility by 2010.
  • Raise a glass. Heineken USA has renewed a distribution agreement with the Satellite Logistics Group of Companies, a beverage logistics specialist based in Houston. The contract, which runs through 2008, will provide full product distribution of Heineken beer brands from four warehouses to several regions of the country. As part of the deal, Heineken will have access to new online visibility tools to view inventories and shipping status from anywhere in the world.
  • No continental divide here. Oakland, Calif.-based APL Logistics has joined with Christian Salvesen, a European logistics company, in a joint venture to provide supply chain management capabilities and a strong presence in land-based logistics. The yet-to-be-named partnership will rely on APL's intercontinental reach and Christian Salvesen's comprehensive European network.
  • Building on what they had. Building materials supplier Owens Corning has installed Provia Software's ViaWare Warehouse Management Solution at six sites in Texas, California, Quebec, South Carolina and Ohio. This brings the total number of Owens Corning facilities using the Provia software to 33 sites in eight countries.
  • No more paper chase. Paper products company Kimberly-Clark Europe has renewed its long-term contract with Schneider Logistics for hosted transportation management services. Kimberly-Clark's Shared Service Center in Brighton, UK, which controls logistics operations throughout Europe, uses Schneider's SUMITC transportation management solution to provide centralized control, visibility, execution and management of Kimberly-Clark's transportation activities.
  • More Lynx in the chain. UPS has acquired LYNX Express, one of the largest independent parcel carriers in the United Kingdom. The $96.5 million deal will further strengthen UPS's package delivery capabilities in Great Britain.

Supply chain planning (SCP) leaders working on transformation efforts are focused on two major high-impact technology trends, including composite AI and supply chain data governance, according to a study from Gartner, Inc.

"SCP leaders are in the process of developing transformation roadmaps that will prioritize delivering on advanced decision intelligence and automated decision making," Eva Dawkins, Director Analyst in Gartner’s Supply Chain practice, said in a release. "Composite AI, which is the combined application of different AI techniques to improve learning efficiency, will drive the optimization and automation of many planning activities at scale, while supply chain data governance is the foundational key for digital transformation.”

Dexory raises $80 million for inventory-counting robots

The British logistics robot vendor Dexory this week said it has raised $80 million in venture funding to support an expansion of its artificial intelligence (AI) powered features, grow its global team, and accelerate the deployment of its autonomous robots.

A “significant focus” continues to be on expanding across the U.S. market, where Dexory is live with customers in seven states and last month opened a U.S. headquarters in Nashville. The Series B will also enhance development and production facilities at its UK headquarters, the firm said.

Deutsche Bahn says sale of DB Schenker will cut debt, improve rail

German rail giant Deutsche Bahn AG yesterday said it will cut its debt and boost its focus on improving rail infrastructure thanks to its formal approval of the deal to sell its logistics subsidiary DB Schenker to the Danish transport and logistics group DSV for a total price of $16.3 billion.

Originally announced in September, the move will allow Deutsche Bahn to “fully focus on restructuring the rail infrastructure in Germany and providing climate-friendly passenger and freight transport operations in Germany and Europe,” Werner Gatzer, Chairman of the DB Supervisory Board, said in a release.

Reinke moves from TIA to IANA in top office

Transportation industry veteran Anne Reinke will become president & CEO of trade group the Intermodal Association of North America (IANA) at the end of the year, stepping into the position from her previous post leading third party logistics (3PL) trade group the Transportation Intermediaries Association (TIA), both organizations said today.

Reinke will take her new job upon the retirement of Joni Casey at the end of the year. Casey had announced in July that she would step down after 27 years at the helm of IANA.
