According to the Department of Energy's "Commercial Vehicle Idling Study," eliminating winter idling can return a per-season average savings of between $2,500 and $4,500 in fuel and maintenance costs for each vehicle in the fleet.
The Autotherm Division of Enthal Systems announces its Autotherm No Idle Vehicle Interior Heating System. Once turned on by the driver at the beginning of the heating season, this non-fuel-burning vehicle interior heating system operates and terminates operation automatically each time the driver turns off the ignition. The driver can leave the vehicle safely locked and return hours later to a warm interior, with an exterior free of snow and ice.
While operating, the Autotherm System uses minuscule amounts of electricity from the vehicle's battery. The Autotherm System works by powering the vehicle's existing heater when the engine is off. This enables the heater to recover the stored waste energy previously generated and paid for when the vehicle was being driven.
The Autotherm System consists of three main components that weigh less than five pounds and occupy under 1/4 of a cubic foot in total volume. It requires no periodic maintenance and can easily be installed in under three hours on any 12-volt negative ground vehicle that has a water-cooled traction engine.
This product is available as both an aftermarket retrofit solution for existing vehicles and as a factory option on new medium-duty trucks. The Autotherm System is CARB( California Air Resources Board) and EPA-classified as a non-emitting vehicle interior heating system.
