BASRA GATEWAY TERMINAL GOES LIVE WITH N4 TERMINAL OPERATING SYSTEM

TERMINAL GOES LIVE WITH NAVIS N4 TO ENHANCE THE CUSTOMER EXPERIENCE, INCREASE PRODUCTIVITY AND IMPROVE EMPLOYEE SAFETY

Navis, a part of Cargotec Corporation, and provider of operational technologies and services that unlock greater performance and efficiency for the world's leading terminal operators, today announced that Basra Gateway Terminal (BGT), part of International Container Terminal Services, Inc. (ICTSI), has successfully gone live with Navis' N4 terminal operating system. Upgrading to N4 from an in-house operating system will help BGT achieve key operational goals by enhancing the customer experience while at the same time increasing terminal productivity by managing resources in a more efficient way, as well as improving the safety of yard workers.

BGT is a leading container terminal located at the port of Umm Qasr, Iraq, providing shipping lines and cargo ships with a modern gateway to the country. BGT is undergoing an expansion project that will cover 600 meters of quay with a capacity of 900,000 TEUs.

"With the goal of expanding our throughput capacity with the first of three new berths becoming operational in Q3 of this year, combined with our rapid growth in the first two years of operation, we looked for best-in-class technologies that will enable us maintain our high quality service. Navis offered the best solution in the market as illustrated by its wide use globally," said Mr. Phillip Marsham, CEO of Basra Gateway Terminal. "Implementation of Navis is an innovative, forward-thinking step for the terminal. It will help ensure that Basra Gateway Terminal can continue to keep improving on our customer service commitments, and empower further enhancement of service delivery, reinforcing our position as a key terminal operator in the Iraqi market."

This on-time and on-budget implementation of Navis N4 TOS was solely managed on site by internal ICTSI resources from Manila and the EMEA region. Their hard efforts ensured excellent support of the implementation, coupled with training and go-live back up. This is an important milestone in BGT's rapid expansion and ensures optimization and improvement of the overall effectiveness to support future growth. The implementation also underscores BGT's commitment to a global gold standard terminal operating system for their customers.

"We are proud to partner with a terminal that is so committed to enhancing customer experience," said Guenter Schmidmeir, Navis VP and General Manager, EMEA. "We are looking forward to supporting BGT in this milestone transition as they offer optimized services and improve overall effectiveness and safety in order to continue growing and thriving. Navis will continue to work side-by-side with BGT throughout all phases of the N4 implementation and we are certain that the terminal will continue setting an example for the region at-large."

Australian supermarket chain rolls out AI-powered grocery carts

Grocery shoppers in Australia will soon be able to zip in and out of the store in record time, bypassing the lines for cashiers or self-checkout kiosks altogether. They can just walk in, make their selections, and walk out with their bags in hand.

The secret to this express shopping experience is the “Caper Cart,” an AI (artificial intelligence)-powered smart trolley from San Francisco-based Instacart. In its first deployment in the Asia Pacific (APAC) region, the system is being tested by Coles Supermarkets, a food and beverage retailer with more than 1,800 grocery and liquor stores throughout the country.

How green is your glue?

If you’re looking to make the packaging process more eco-friendly, the obvious place to start is with the box itself. And that’s exactly what Salt Lake City-based Packsize did when it made its initial foray into sustainable packaging back in 2002. That year, the company launched its first product, an innovative on-demand packaging system designed to reduce cardboard waste (and the need for filler material) by creating a right-sized box for each shipment.

Now the company is ready for the next step: greening up the glue.
