Sealed Air, a manufacturer of packing and void-fill material, showcased some of its environmentally friendly new products and described its deep commitment to recycling at MODEX 2012. The company not only makes some of its products out of post-industrial and post-consumer materials but also has developed its own closed-loop system in which it collects used dunnage from customers and recycles it into new material.
Some of Sealed Air's Ethafoam package inserts, including several standard and low-abrasion versions, are made from 100-percent recycled polyethylene. Customers that are large users can reuse the foam, and then bag or bale scrap and other end-of-life material. Sealed Air will pick up the material and recycle it to produce new Ethafoam. Although the recycled foam is more expensive to make, said product manager Lew Smith, Sealed Air prices it the same as conventionally produced products.
Sealed Air's commitment to recycling also extends to its paper products. The company operates three paper mills that manufacture all of its kraft paper from recycled material—about 85 percent post-industrial and 15 percent post-consumer paper.
