Symbol Technologies Inc. has countersued a major competitor in the data capture industry. It claims Hand Held Products Inc. infringed on 12 Symbol patents. In a still-pending 2001 case, Hand Held made similar charges against Symbol.

The patents in the latest case are focused on imager-based barcode readers, integrated terminals and engines.

Symbol wants injunctive relief plus damages. Hand Held says it expects to win a monetary award as a result of its claims.
