It's been a good year for the Center for Supply Chain Research at Penn State's Smeal College of Business. In February, a team of its MBA students took first place in a prestigious supply chain case study competition—the Annual FedEx Freight International Graduate Logistics Case Competition— for the third time in four years. Then, in August, directors of the International Society of Logistics (SOLE) named the Center for Supply Chain Research the 2006 institutional recipient of the Eccles Medal.
Named for the late Admiral Henry Eccles, one of the most highly respected logisticians of the 20th century, the Eccles Medal recognizes outstanding achievements in the development or administration of logistics education. This marks the second time the medal has been awarded to someone associated with the Center for Supply Chain Research. In 2004, John Coyle, the center's founder and professor emeritus of business administration, was named the individual medal recipient.
