Datalogic Scanning Inc., a provider of fixed-position scanners, has announced the newest addition to its Magellan family of high-performance point-of-sale (POS) bar-code scanners. The Magellan 8400 scanner features a compact, economical scan engine design. Although the 8400's scan engine uses a single motor, it exceeds the performance of many other scanners, according to the company. To further reduce maintenance requirements, the Magellan 8400 scanner features lower speeds, fewer components, and reduced power consumption. The sealed scan engine also provides better protection from dust, debris, and liquids.
These scanners consume an average of 7 watts of power, which can reduce energy costs by up to 77 percent over other scanners, the company says.
Like other scanners in the Magellan line, the 8400 features the company's OmegaTek Productivity Technology, which is based upon Datalogic's special signal-processing chip. Datalogic designed this chip to read bar-code labels more accurately. OmegaTek reads hardto-read labels by "stitching" label segments, filling in the gaps, and reconstructing the entire contents of the label. This technology provides more effective scanning of poorly printed bar codes and hardto-read labels.
