Sapient Automation is now providing an automatic tray-height scanning system for its Viper Vertical Lift Module (VLM). It also has redesigned the module's tray design. These changes can provide greater than 50 percent more storage density while allowing distribution applications to lower their unit acquisition cost.
The automatic tray-height scanning system determines each tray's exact storage height requirement down to a one-inch increment every time a tray is retrieved. The VLM's control system then determines the optimum storage position for the tray based on optimizing space and retrieval time.
The new tray design uses a number of enhancements to provide increased levels of storage capacity. The Viper VLM tray now has thinner sidewalls, flat bottoms, and no dividers or support cross members in the open storage area. Likewise, the trays are available in 2-, 3-, and 4-meter widths. The flat bottom design eliminates the need for tray liners, which increase costs and take up space. The thinner sidewalls provide more storage space. By eliminating reinforcement cross members in the storage area, users are able to increase storage capacity and improve storage management.
