DHL Supply Chain and Mills Fleet Farm develop an end-to-end supply chain in Wisconsin

WESTERVILLE, OHIO January 8, 2018: DHL Supply Chain, the Americas' leader in contract logistics and part of Deutsche Post DHL Group, and Mills Fleet Farm, a retailer of lifestyle merchandise serving active, outdoor families and farm consumers, partnered together to design, construct and staff a new state-of-the-art distribution center in Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin. The 1,100,000-square-foot facility includes an integrated warehouse and transportation solution that will help Mills Fleet Farm optimize logistic services for its 37 stores located throughout Wisconsin, Minnesota, Iowa and North Dakota by serving as the flagship facility.

DHL Supply Chain's Solutions Design team used proprietary inventory and operational modeling tools to design a facility for Mills Fleet Farm that provides an optimal balance of capital investment, operating expense, service levels and inventory levels. The facility is expected to begin operations in the first half of the year, bringing several hundred jobs to the area.

"This solution was an integrated and holistic effort that extended beyond our managed transportation solutions to include DHL Supply Chain's Solutions Design, warehouse and finance services," said Chris Bronski, Director of DHL Supply Chain's Managed Transportation Solutions. "Because of our expertise, resources and commitment to innovation, Mills Fleet Farm now has a solution that will deliver operational excellence and support future growth."

Mills Fleet Farm has a diversified offering of merchandise with over 120,000 stock keeping units (SKUs) across a broad range of product categories such as auto, home living, farm and pet, outdoor/sporting goods, apparel/footwear, candy/snacks, hardware and seasonal.

"We partnered with DHL Supply Chain to help support our retail growth," said Rich Tannenbaum, Senior Vice President of Mills Fleet Farm. "Their warehouse and transportation management services ensure that we continue to exceed our customers' expectations, and that our products are delivered on-time, every time. Australian supermarket chain rolls out AI-powered grocery carts

Grocery shoppers in Australia will soon be able to zip in and out of the store in record time, bypassing the lines for cashiers or self-checkout kiosks altogether. They can just walk in, make their selections, and walk out with their bags in hand.

The secret to this express shopping experience is the “Caper Cart,” an AI (artificial intelligence)-powered smart trolley from San Francisco-based Instacart. In its first deployment in the Asia Pacific (APAC) region, the system is being tested by Coles Supermarkets, a food and beverage retailer with more than 1,800 grocery and liquor stores throughout the country.

How green is your glue?

If you’re looking to make the packaging process more eco-friendly, the obvious place to start is with the box itself. And that’s exactly what Salt Lake City-based Packsize did when it made its initial foray into sustainable packaging back in 2002. That year, the company launched its first product, an innovative on-demand packaging system designed to reduce cardboard waste (and the need for filler material) by creating a right-sized box for each shipment.
