As omnichannel retailing and e-commerce grow in importance, companies are under increasing pressure to know exactly where in the supply chain their products are at all times. Sensor company SICK is displaying several track-and-trace solutions at ProMat 2015 that it believes can help with this quest for visibility.
Its RFMS (Radio-Frequency Modular System) Pro, for example, wraps over a conveyor and can scan not only the RFID tags on the cartons passing through it but also the tags on the items inside the box. As a result, companies can validate and verify the number of items in the box without having to actually open it.
The company was also demonstrating its camera-based track-and-trace systems that can capture images of the condition of each box and bar-code label. The system can help users identify and analyze where and when package or label damage may be occurring.
