Mobile transportation equipment: Big Joe, a developer of electric lift trucks and industrial trucks, has introduced what it calls the J1 Joey task support vehicle.
According to Big Joe, the Joey was developed based on input from dozens of retail, warehousing, and distribution firms over the past three years whose needs were not being met by existing equipment. It combines attributes of elevating work platforms, order pickers, and tuggers, says the company. Developed as an alternative to rolling ladders or other larger equipment, "Joey" can lift an operator 126 inches off the floor, work in aisles under 7 feet, and be driven at height from task to task. Operators can use it for tasks such as overhead maintenance and order picking.
The Joey has a large 31.5-feet-by-20.5-feet front-load tray, a stowable rear tray, and an operator's compartment that can carry up to 1,000 pounds combined. It features fingertip controls that are built into the operator compartment's guardrails. These controls include electronic power steering, lift, lower, horn, and speed control.
The Joey makes tight turns because it has a 180-degree articulating central front drive wheel. When the platform is elevated, the vehicle automatically reduces its speed. According to the manufacturer, the vehicle has an I-beam channel mast and unitized steel frame, which create a durable foundation for the truck.
The vehicle has an AC drive motor that can be programmed through the onboard LCD dash. This motor is powered by a 224AH AGM maintenance-free battery pack that supports opportunity charging from standard 120v outlets.
The Joey will be available for purchase starting Jan. 15, 2013 from Big Joe dealers across North America.
