Old Dominion Sends 19 Drivers to 2016 National Truck Driving Championship

THOMASVILLE, N.C. (Sep. 1, 2016) -Old Dominion Freight Line, Inc. sent 19 drivers to compete in the 79th Annual National Truck Driving Championship in Indianapolis.

Bill Hill, a driver based out of Old Dominion's Boise, ID Service Center earned second place in the Flatbed Class. In 2012, Hill was named the Grand Champion and Idaho's Rookie of the Year. That same year and for the next two years, he won first place in the 5-Axle Van Class. Hill has been driving professionally for 15 years, and started at Old Dominion in 2006.

Mark Putnam, a driver out of the Greenville, SC Service Center was part of the winning South Carolina State Team. The State Team Trophy was awarded to the team of state champions who achieved the highest average score at the Championships. The state association and each driver on the winning team received a plaque. Putnam has been driving for Old Dominion since 2006.

"The NTDC is an opportunity for us to celebrate our driver's hard work, skills and competitive spirit," said Greg Gantt, president and COO of Old Dominion. "We are extremely proud of Bill Hill, Mark Putnam and every member of the OD Family that participated in the National and State Championships."

The National Truck Driving Championship is hosted every year by the American Trucking Associations. The winners in eight classes of competition from 50 State Trucking Associations' Truck Driving Championships move onto compete in the National Championship.

The competition includes a written examination, personal interview, pre-tip inspection test and skills test. Drivers have the opportunity to demonstrate their driving and inspection skills, as well as their knowledge and professionalism.
