a kinder, gentler OSHA

OSHA wants you to know it's not all about compliance audits and fines. To buff up its image, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration is partnering with several manufacturing industry groups to improve compliance with its workplace safety and health standards.

In an expansion of its three-year-old business alliance program, OSHA announced in September that it would work with the Crane Manufacturers Association of America (CMAA), the Hoist Manufacturers Institute (HMI) and the Monorail Manufacturers Association (MMA) to provide crane, hoist and monorail systems owners and operators with information, guidance, and access to education and training resources that will enhance their workplace safety and health. The program includes a host of outreach and communication initiatives, such as providing information on recognizing and preventing workplace hazards; involvement at OSHA, CMAA, HMI and MMA conferences and other events; sharing information with industry safety and health professionals regarding best practices and effective approaches to safety; and working to resolve specific issues with the safe use of crane, hoist and monorail equipment.

Nearly three-quarters (71%) of the 250 procurement and operations leaders surveyed think MRO procurement/operations should be treated as a strategic initiative for continuous improvement and a potential innovation source. However, just over half (58%) of respondents note that MRO procurement/operations are treated as strategic organizational initiatives.
