You just can't make some people happy, as economic development officials in Seguin, Texas, recently learned. In hopes of luring the giant retail chain Lowe's to build a DC in Seguin, city officials had offered to reroute a creek running through the planned site. But in the end, even that wasn't enough. The city learned recently that Lowe's would not be building a much anticipated 1.4 million-square-foot DC that would have employed up to 600 workers.
City officials evidently wanted the DC badly. According to the San Antonio Express-News, the city was not only prepared to realign the creek but was also ready to offer Lowe's 171 acres of free land for the site.
The city, along with Guadalupe County and the local economic development corporation, assembled a package of financial incentives worth more than $6 million. Aside from the free land, the deal included such lures as a 10-year, 100-percent tax abatement; major drainage improvements; and other infrastructure changes.
Lowe's did not comment on its reasons for abandoning the site.
