After reaching an all-time high in October, the volume of cargo moving among the three North American countries via surface transportation (truck, rail and pipeline) hit a new high this spring. Data from the U.S. Transportation Department's Bureau of Statistics (BTS) show that trade volume (measured by value of goods shipped) between the United States, Canada and Mexico reached $68.2 billion in March, the highest monthly level ever recorded.
The BTS reports that total North American surface transportation trade rose 14.1 percent in March from February. To put the March 2006 performance into perspective, BTS says the previous monthly high was $64.0 billion in October 2005.
