The biggest threat to your safety on the highways isn't brake failure or a fast-moving ice storm. It's the other drivers. Vehicle malfunctions and road conditions are rarely the primary cause of crashes involving cars and trucks, according to a comprehensive, multi-year study by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA). The majority of crashes result from car driver or truck driver action or inaction.
No sooner had the results of the survey, "Large Truck Crash Causation Study," been released than the finger pointing began. Seizing on the finding that car drivers are formally cited more frequently than truck drivers for driving errors and non-performance problems, the American Trucking Associations wasted no time in calling for government and law enforcement agencies to focus more on car drivers' unsafe driving behaviors around large trucks.
