They may have lost their homes and their livelihoods, but at least displaced New Orleans residents didn't have go without King Cakes from Randazzo's Camellia City Bakery during Mardi Gras.
The popular New Orleans-based bakery, which was devastated by Hurricane Katrina, re-opened only recently. To celebrate its reopening, the bakery teamed up with global express delivery company DHL in a special program to deliver the cakes nationwide in time for Mardi Gras, bringing a taste of home to displaced New Orleans residents. DHL even developed a festive co-branded shipping box, specially designed to open from the top to protect the oval-shaped delicacy.
The King Cake is to Mardi Gras what the turkey is to Thanksgiving. It comes with a tiny toy baby baked inside. According to tradition, the person who gets the piece with the baby must provide the King Cake for the next party.
