One of the key trends in distribution management's future will be "advance order pool modeling," says Eric Lamphier, a senior director of project management at software vendor Manhattan Associates.

In advance order pool modeling, software evaluates the various orders sent to the distribution center. The advance order pool modeling software then runs what-if scenarios and assigns those orders to the most appropriate staff, equipment, or location in the warehouse for processing. As more distribution centers designate specific areas inside the warehouse for specific tasks, such as e-commerce or store shipments, order modeling will become critical for maintaining efficiency, Lamphier contends.

Lamphier made his comments during a presentation on the future of distribution management at ProMat 2013.
