Forklift manufacturer UniCarriers Americas Corp. (UCA) said today it is participating in the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA)'s safety promotion efforts during the week of Aug. 13 by hosting public safety speakers and a company-wide competition for the best workplace safety practices.
OSHA's Safe + Sound Week is an annual event that helps raise awareness of the value of safety programs, including management leadership, worker participation, and hazard identification and elimination.
Marengo, Ill.-based UCA will take part in the event by: inviting the local fire department to speak at its facility; awarding raffle tickets to employees who demonstrate the best efficiency, safety, and effectiveness practices; and awarding a pair of Chicago major league baseball tickets for the raffle winner.
The activities will help to emphasize UCA safety programs such as the 5S workplace organization method and the behavior-based safety (BBS) observation system, the company said.
Other events in support of safe practices include monthly employee safety team meetings, monthly safety audits for different departments, third-party compliance audits that are held three times per fiscal year, departmental safety meetings, and "Java with Jim" coffee meetings with UCA President James J. Radous III to encourage employees to participate in open discussions.
