Genco launches multi-tenant healthcare warehouses

FedEx unit will pool small and medium healthcare businesses to allow full-scale supply chain services.

FedEx Co.'s Genco third party logistics (3PL) division today unveiled a multi-tenant warehousing solution that is targeted at healthcare businesses in the U.S. and Canada.

The product offers small and medium-sized manufacturers the same top-tier supply chain solutions that are traditionally available only to large-scale customers with dedicated facilities, Pittsburgh-based Genco said in a release.

Genco supports the service by allowing multiple manufacturers to operate alongside each other in one warehouse while utilizing a designated space equipped with a shared technology platform. Users gain increased access to flexible cost structures, rapid scalability, and help in managing regulatory compliance, Genco said.

"Due to increasing margin pressures within the healthcare industry, manufacturers of medical devices, diagnostic testing, and pharmaceuticals are hyper-focused on streamlining their supply chain and enhancing overall efficiency in order to stay competitive," Kevin J. McPherson, vice president of healthcare at Genco, said in a statement.

"We can better help healthcare customers, of all sizes, with their logistics challenges by offering this more flexible solution. It allows our customers to focus less on their supply chain and more on developing innovative products and services that improve the cost, quality and availability of patient care," McPherson said.

The new Genco multi-tenant facilities include a 1.1-million-square-foot facility in Memphis, Tenn., and a 400,000-square-foot building in Milton, Ontario. Both warehouses have support to store and distribute virtually all classes of healthcare products, include advanced warehouse, labor, and quality management technology, and will be licensed to support kitting and relabeling activities. The Memphis facility is positioned near the global FedEx Super Hub, and the Milton facility is in proximity to the FedEx Express Canada hub located at Toronto's Pearson International Airport.

In addition to these services, Genco's healthcare logistics team offers network optimization analysis, inbound and outbound fulfillment, reverse logistics, cold-chain packaging, kitting, relabeling, and transportation management capabilities.
